Treat Teen Acne with these Simple Home Remedies


Acne is a common skin condition that occurs mostly during teenage due to hormonal changes and various other reasons. Marked with painful pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, and deep lumps all around the face, the problem of acne can be really disheartening and embarrassing, it brings down your self-confidence. Well, no more worries! If you find OTC ointments and medicines expensive and not worthy of the amount spent, try your hands on these simple home remedies to treat acne.

Sea Salt

Sea salt possesses excellent absorbing properties that work to absorb excessive oil from the skin. This way, it also shrinks the pores. This wonderful quality of sea salt makes it an effective remedy for acne.

But, it is important to make sure that you do not use table salt as an alternative to sea salt. The reason is that table salt has added chemicals and enzymes to make it suitable for oral intake. Another thing worth mentioning is to apply some olive oil or any rich moisturizer to smoothen the skin. This is because sea salt application can make the skin dry.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is extracted from Melaleuca alternifolia leaves, a tiny tree found in Australia. It is popular for its capability to kick off bacteria and thus reduce skin inflammation. In addition, topical application of tea tree oil helps to reduce acne significantly because of strong anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. It also helps to improve adverse effects of acne, such as irritation, dryness, and burning.

Make it a point to dilute tea tree oil before application with water before application due to its high potency. To apply, mix 1 part of tea tree oil with nine parts of water. Use a cotton swab to apply this mixture onto the affected areas. Let it dry naturally and then rinse off. Follow with applying a generous coat of moisturizer. Repeat the application at least two times a day, or as required.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is prepared by fermenting apple cider, or the unfiltered juice extracted from pressed apples. Akin to other vinegars, apple cider vinegar contains the potential to combat various types of viruses and bacteria. In addition, it also helps alleviate inflammation. The good content of lactic acid helps to alleviate the emergence of acne scars. Basically, apple cider vinegar works by drying up the excess oil from the skin, which is the root cause of acne.

To apply, mix apple cider vinegar and water in the ratio of 1:3.  If, n case, you have a sensitive skin, increase the ratio of water. Apply the prepared solution gently onto the skin, after thorough cleansing, using a clean cotton ball. Allow it to stay for 15-20 seconds and follow with a cold rinse. Repeat the application at least three times a day to get rid of acne quickly.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a tropical plant with leaves containing clear gel. Aloe Vera extract is commonly used to treat skin problems like rashes, abrasions, and burns. In addition, it also supports quicker healing of wounds and combat inflammation of the skin. Research studies have also revealed that the salicylic acid contained by Aloe Vera helps to reduce and prevent acne.

To apply, take an Aloe Vera leaf and cut slit open it using a knife. Pull out the gel using a spoon and apply it directly onto the affected areas. Repeat this remedy at least two times a day till the problem subsides.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel has been in use since ages to treat an array of skin conditions, such as dandruff, burns, varicose veins, eczema, bruises, insect bites, and even acne. Witch hazel contains excellent properties to combat bacteria, alleviate skin inflammation, and support quick healing.

To apply, mix a tablespoon of witch hazel with a cup of water. Let it soak for half an hour and then bring to a boil. Simmer and let cook, covered with a lid for about ten minutes. Remove from heat and allow it to cool at room temperature for another ten minutes. Strain the concoction and store is an airtight container. Apply the prepared solution on affected areas at least two times a day till acne goes away completely.


In addition to the aforesaid home remedies, it is equally important to follow a good exercise routine. Exercise helps to improve blood circulation. The improved blood flow provides nourishment to skin cells thus facilitating prevention and quick healing of acne. In addition, regular exercise also regulates hormone balance. Another benefit of exercise is reduction in stress levels, another major cause for acne. So, make sure to exercise for half an hour at least three days a week to keep your body and skin healthy.
