The outbreak of acne over lip line is known as lip line pimple. This lip line acne is found to be mostly associated with an increase in the body’s hormonal levels. This type of pimple is seen during the adolescent period.

There are certain factors which trigger acne namely stress, usage of low-quality skin and lip care products, high consumption of dairy and fatty food products, hereditary, air pollution etc., Scroll down to know about its causes one by one in detail.

An increase in the hormonal level at the time of menstrual cycle for girls (estrogen and progesterone) and during the teenage period for guys (testosterone) can lead to the lip line acne around the mouth and all over the face.

2. Skin Type

Persons acquiring an oily type of skin are more prone to the formation of pimple on lip line. Excessive oil secretion can clog the skin pores which outbreaks acne over the edges of a lip.

3. Chemical based Skin Products

Even the skin products like moisturizer, fairness cream, compact powder, foundation, night cream, etc., can trigger the breakout of pimples over the lip line region. The chemicals may penetrate skin causing lip line infection and acne. See to the date of expiry before using it.

The use of low-quality lip care products like lip balm, lip gloss and lipstick may create an allergic reaction. You might be sensitive to the ingredients present in those products. So always prefer high-quality lip care products or a branded one.

Secondly, the presence of wax in the lip balm may block the pores that trap the bacteria and dirt in it, causing lip line pimples. It even spreads the bacteria to other places over the lip line region and re-infecting it.

The aroma from these products has the capability to stimulate the production of sebum by sebaceous glands, leading to clogged pores.

5. Stress

Stress has an impact on acne by worsening the condition. When you are in stress, your body releases stress-related hormone namely, Corticotrophin (CRH). This hormone stimulates the sebaceous gland to drive up the production of sebum which gives rise to a pimple.

6. Bacterial Infection

Propionibacterium acnes or P. acnes is the causative bacteria for pimple formation. Usually, these bacteria live on the skin. When the skin pore clogged with dirt, dead cells or increased sebum level, the bacteria got trapped inside the blocked pores. This brings about the inflammatory response of the body like swelling and redness, causing pimple.

7. Lip Waxing

You may trigger breakouts after lip waxing and it is considered as a root cause for lip line pimple. This is due to the irritation and bacterial presence over that region. After waxing the pores get widened which is susceptible to bacterial entrapment that gives rise to acne called waxing pimples.

8. Environmental Factors

There are many environmental factors that are responsible for the occurrence of lip line pimple. Such factors include air pollution, water pollution, exposure to oil, prolonged exposure to sun etc., Heat and humidity also provoke breakouts by increasing oil production in defense to replace the lost skin moisture resulting in blockage and flare-up of acne.

9. Smoking

Smoking is considered as a factor that triggers acne but hasn’t proved yet. Some studies suggest that smoking causes non-inflammatory acne which does not show any inflammatory signs like redness. Smokers are more prone to non-inflammatory acne.
