Home Remedies for Jaundice in New Born Babies

Jaundice is very common in newborn babies. It is the yellow color seen on the skin of almost every newborn. Basically, jaundice is said to occur with buildup of a chemical called bilirubin in the blood of the newborn due to the replacement of old red blood cells by the new ones. The liver breaks down the bilirubin and enables it to be removed from the body.

Home Remedies for Jaundice in New Born

Generally, jaundice in new born babies doesn’t require any treatment. If any treatment is required, you can place your baby undressed under special lights to lower the level of bilirubin. Besides, there are also some home remedies that can help to treat jaundice in your newborn without posing much harm.

1. Wheat Grass

Wheat Grass for mother

Wheat grass juice improves the enzymatic action of the liver thus improving the liver’s capability to remove excessive bilirubin from the body. You can add wheat grass juice to the formula given to the baby. The apt dosage is about 15-20 drops a day added well to the formula. Well, if that doesn’t suit, the mother can drink about 2 ounces of juice per day. The juice drunk by mother will pass to the baby automatically through feed. This remedy not only fades away existing jaundice but also prevents it from occurring in new born babies.

2. Frequent Feeding

Flushing out of bilirubin from body can be more effective through hydration. This is possible with frequent breast-feeding. Initially, milk production is lesser and therefore, the frequency of feeding is also slow. This can be a cause for early jaundice. If you increase the feeding frequency, milk production would also increase. Therefore, make sure to feed the baby every 2-3 hours and also when he/she wakes up during the night. If, in any case, the production of breast milk is inadequate, go for supplement formula to keep up with hydration levels and aid removal of bilirubin from the baby’s body.

3. At-home Lamp Therapy

If, in spite of home remedies, the level of bilirubin is raising rather than going down, give a try for lamp therapy at home. This remedy is an alternative to keeping the baby in the hospital. If the level of bilirubin is abnormally high, keep the baby under special sun lamp. This home treatment is very effective for mild jaundice in new born babies.

4. Herbal Supplements for Mother

To treat jaundice in babies, provide herbal supplements to the mother. These include dandelion tea, comfrey leaf, catnip, and agrimony. All these supplements contain detoxifying agents. If the mother takes these supplements, the goodness will transfer to the baby through breast milk. These natural detoxifiers are good at removing excessive bilirubin from the baby’s body. Mother should continue to breast feed so as to keep the mild treatment on and get rid of jaundice easily.

5. Sunlight Exposure

This is the simplest and most natural remedy to treat jaundice in new born babies. However, this remedy is effective only in case of mild jaundice that doesn’t require any treatment. All that is required to be done is to keep the baby in sunlight for 10-15 minutes every day, at least 4 times a day. Make sure to expose the baby’s skin while keeping the glass window closed to filter the sunlight. The effect of sunlight dissolves the bilirubin in the skin thus making it excrete through urine.

6. Bili-blanket

The bili-blanket is a type of portable device for phototherapy, used to treat jaundice in infants. It can be used easily at home to treat mild jaundice. You just have to wrap your baby in the bili-blanket to control the raising level of bilirubin in the skin.

7. Do not Breast Feed for Some Time

Although the above remedies stressed on frequent feeding, you should put a stop to breast feeding if the doctor suggests that the jaundice has occurred due to breast milk. However, just to make sure that the production of breast milk doesn’t stop, just pump your breast every day. You can resume breast feeding once the doctor allows to.

The above suggested home remedies should be applied only after thorough consultation with the doctor. Also, make it a point to ensure the extent of jaundice by a professional before applying any home remedy to treat it by you.
