The first thought that comes to your mind, when you get hit with something hot, might be what to put on the burn to soothe the pain and prevent damage. Although there are over-the-counter medicines to help the burns heal, you can treat them easily with simple home remedies. These home remedies turn stuff from your pantry into treatments that can provide quick relief.

Honey

It is a medically proven fact that topical application of honey on burn affected areas helps to prevent formation of any kind of infection. Just a few drops of honey are adequate to prevent infection. This is because it is highly concentrated and powerful.

Take little amount of honey and apply it topically over the burn using a cotton swab and cover with a gauze bandage. Change the bandage and repeat application after a few hours.

Cold Water

This is the best and easiest remedy to soothe burns. Put the burnt area under running cold water. This should continue for about ten minutes. Another good idea is to place a cold compress over the affected area. Repeat this remedy every few hours to relieve the discomfort. Also, it is important to drink a minimum of 8-10 glasses of water daily until you get complete relief from the burn.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera contains astringent and tissue-healing properties that support healing of burns. Cut a small piece of the Aloe Vera leaf and apply freshly extracted gel directly onto the burnt area. You can also add a teaspoon each of Aloe Vera gel and turmeric to apply over the burn. If you don’t have an aloe vera plant, you can also apply a crème that contains aloe vera as the primary ingredient.

Black Tea Bags

Black tea contains tannic acid that helps to pull out the heat of a burn and further reduce the pain. Steep three tea bags in a pitcher filled with lukewarm water for about ten minutes. Let the solution cool down. Then, soak a clean cloth in it and place it over the affected area. Repeat the application as required. Alternatively, you can also put cold, wet tea bags directly over the burn area.

Lemon Juice and Coconut Oil

Both lemon juice and coconut oil support healing of minor burns when it has cooled down and dried. Coconut oil contains high content of vitamin E and fatty acids, like lauric acid, caprylic acid, and myristic acid, to provide antioxidant, anti- fungal, and anti-bacterial benefits. Lemon juice, on the other hand, contains acidic properties to lighten the scars naturally. Take some coconut oil and add a few drops of lemon juice to it. Mix it well and then apply this mixture over the affected area to smooth the progress of healing.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil contains pain relieving as well as antiseptic properties. The oil also reduces the risk of scarring. Add 5-6 drops of lavender oil to two cups of water. Soak a clean cloth in it and use as a compress several times a day. You can also apply lavender oil directly over the burn. But, using lavender any essential oil without dilution is not recommended usually.

Alternatively, you can add a few drops of lavender essential oil to two teaspoons of honey. Apply this solution over the affected area 4-5 times a day.

Vinegar

The antiseptic and astringent properties contained by vinegar can be extremely helpful to treat minor burns and prevent infections. Dilute apple cider vinegar or white vinegar using equal amount of water. Use this solution to rinse the burnt area. Then, cover the burnt area with a cloth soaked in diluted vinegar. Replace the cloth with a fresh one after regular intervals of 2-3 hours.

Onion Juice

Onion juice contains components such as sulfur compounds and quercetin, which help to relieve pain, support quick healing, and reduce the chances of blistering a well.

Cut a fresh onion and apply freshly extracted juice over the burnt area. Make it a point to use only freshly cut onions. This is because onions have a tendency to lose their medicinal properties a few minutes after cutting. Repeat the remedy several times a day.

Raw Potato

Raw potato helps to treat minor skin burns with its soothing and anti-irritating properties. It also reduces the pain thus reducing the chances of getting blisters. Just cut a slice of raw potato and rub it over the burn. Make sure that the juice from raw potato gets released all over the area. Alternatively, grate a raw potato and apply it all over the burnt area. Leave it to work for 15 minutes. Rinse off with cold water. Repeat this remedy 2-3 times day.
